“I was surrounded by Congolese women growing up. They always ensured my sister and I showered twice a day, scrubbing ourselves with this very rough thing that’s kind of like a Brillo pad that really makes you feel like you’re properly clean. I still shower in the mornings and at night, even if they take 45 minutes each, and after I always moisturise like crazy.
“I remember my grandmother melting raw shea and cocoa butter with glycerin, which feels like a sticky oil and using it on her face. My mum used to cover mine and my sister’s faces with shea butter before we went to school, and by the time 3pm rolled around, we were still shiny.
I love using these butters now — they’re at the heart of all my products, from the highlighter to the lip gloss to the cream blush. My make-up is skincare-based with pigment, inspired by the love for skin by the women in my family as they loved and took care of themselves, others, and me.”
